Three architecture options

Almost every paging or PA proposal describes one of these three architectures. Understanding which one you are being quoted is the first step to judging whether it fits.

Traditional 100V PA

A classic amplifier-to-speaker architecture. A central amplifier drives 100-volt speaker lines run throughout the site.

Best for

  • Simple one-way paging
  • Existing analogue estates
  • Cost-sensitive basic systems

Strength: Simple, mature and economical.

Trade-off: Less endpoint-level control and integration.

Full IP / PoE paging

Network-based endpoints where each speaker or intercom is an IP device powered over the network via PoE.

Best for

  • Modern distributed sites
  • Flexible zoning, bells and scheduling
  • Two-way communication and network integration

Strength: Scalable control and endpoint intelligence.

Trade-off: Network readiness matters.

Hybrid IP + 100V

An IP control layer combined with retained 100V infrastructure, bridging new intelligence with existing speakers and cabling.

Best for

  • Staged upgrades
  • Retaining usable speakers and cabling
  • Modern controls without replacing everything

Strength: Protects useful existing investment.

Trade-off: Design needs to account for both architectures.
