Best IP paging, PA, bell and intercom systems: 2026 buyer's guide
Comparing paging systems by brand alone is not very useful. A school, hospital, warehouse or commercial campus normally cares about four things: does the system have the right features, is it easy to run, will it scale, and does the extra capability justify the price? This guide compares SPON, Algo, Axis, TOA, AtlasIED, Bosch PRAESENSA and traditional 100V PA on exactly those questions.

Which IP paging system offers the best value for a school?
For a typical feature-rich school project, SPON currently sits in the strongest all-round value position in this guide because it combines bells, live and scheduled paging, emergency messaging, zoning, intercom and integration at a lower relative product-cost tier than the premium enterprise systems. Algo can be equally compelling where SIP/VoIP integration is the main requirement, while Axis can justify a higher endpoint price through particularly simple administration and strong security-system integration.
Which school PA system is easiest to use?
For small and mid-sized IP audio deployments, Axis has the clearest documented ease-of-use advantage: Audio Manager Edge is built into the devices, uses a standard browser, supports drag-and-drop zones and provides an intuitive dashboard. Algo is also straightforward in SIP environments. SPON is designed around centralized management, schedules and role-based permissions and should be easy for staff after commissioning, but independent public usability reviews are less numerous.
Which system has the most features?
There is no single winner because the feature sets solve different problems. Bosch PRAESENSA has the deepest mission-critical voice-alarm, supervision and redundancy capability. AtlasIED is particularly strong in enterprise mass notification and visual messaging. SPON has one of the broadest combinations of features that are directly useful to a normal school. TOA spans mature intercom, IP paging and certified voice alarm across several product families.
Which system is cheapest?
For a basic one-way PA, traditional 100V hardware is usually the lowest-cost starting point. Among modern IP options, SPON and Algo generally occupy the lower-to-middle part of the cost spectrum in this comparison. Axis and TOA typically move higher depending on endpoint and platform choice, while AtlasIED and Bosch sit at the premium end. A site-specific design can reverse that order if one platform reuses substantially more existing infrastructure than another.
Which system should a New Zealand school choose?
If the brief is a conventional modern school system with scheduled bells, live paging, lockdown/emergency announcements, classroom and outdoor coverage, zoning and optional intercom, SPON, Algo and Axis are the most obvious price-conscious IP shortlists. SPON has the broadest integrated school feature proposition of those three, Algo is particularly strong for SIP-first environments, and Axis is especially attractive where operational simplicity and security integration matter.
TOA, AtlasIED and Bosch move up the shortlist as the project becomes more specialised. Certified voice alarm, visual alerting, very large estates, advanced redundancy, mission-critical operation or existing enterprise-standard platforms can justify their additional cost and complexity.
Is a more expensive PA system automatically better?
No. More expensive systems often buy deeper redundancy, higher-end endpoint hardware, visual notification, certification or enterprise management. Those are valuable only if the project needs them. The best system is the least complicated platform that reliably meets the real operational and safety requirements with enough headroom for future growth.
Are IP paging systems always better than traditional 100V PA?
No. A basic 100V system can still be the lowest-cost answer for straightforward one-way paging. Full IP becomes increasingly attractive when the site wants flexible zones, per-endpoint control, scheduling, intercom, monitoring, remote administration or staged future expansion. Hybrid systems can combine both approaches.
What about installation cost?
Installation can change the ranking. A lower-cost IP speaker may still require new structured cabling and PoE switching, while a higher-cost gateway may allow an existing 100V speaker network to stay in service. Can a school get funding for an IP paging or bell upgrade?
Potentially. For New Zealand state schools, fixed communications infrastructure may have a pathway through 5YA capital funding within the 10YPP process depending on the property, project reason, available allocation and Ministry process.
